How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works through a wide range of biological mechanisms. It works by affecting the fascia causing localized inflammation, encouraging an immune response and other chemical releases as endorphins. Acupuncture has been shown to affect brain activity as well. These are just a few mechanisms known. As research continues expect more new and different explanations and mechanisms.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory acupuncture works by restoring balance to vital energies and substances.

How can I prepare for treatment?

What should I expect when getting treatment?

Basic treatment follows a medical model.

  • Pay.

  • Intake and evaluation (seated),

  • Change to appropriate clothing. (If necessary.)

  • Treatment. Which may have multiple elements.

  • Quick post treatment re-evaluation.

  • Recommendations if appropriate.

  • Schedule next appointment.

The entire process last 60-90 minutes but is adjustable if the patient mentions time constraints prior to treatment.

Wear appropriate clothing. Loose fitting clothing facilitates treatment. If this is not possible then hospital style gowns are sometimes available. (Depending on the office.)

How often should I get treatment?

The answer depends on your goals. Patients receive treatment from several times per week to monthly. The frequency depends on several factors.

  • Treatment objectives and goals.

  • Type of ailment or concern.

  • Life style.

  • Time constraints.

  • Type of care- preventative, palliative, management etc.

  • Other.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Virtually no sensation, virtually painless. The clinician's training, technique, style of acupuncture, patient expectations, distress ailment, body part and sensitivity all contribute to the comfort or discomfort and may change each treatment.

  • Blue Cross/Blue Shield- in-network

  • Cigna- in-network

  • NYSHIP- out-of-network

  • No-fault

  • Worker's compensation

Do you accept insurance plans?

Medicare generally only pays for acupuncture provided by physicians who are also allowed to practice acupuncture (double degree).

Medicare covers acupuncture only if:

  • Performed by physicians who are also allowed allowed to practice acupuncture (double degree).

  • The complaint is chronic lower back pain. (Maximum 20 treatments per year.)

Talk to your government representative if you believe congress should make non-physician licensed acupuncturists Medicare providers.
